What to Do after a Car Accident

Being in a car accident can be stressful.  These situations are often hectic and emotional.  You need to know what to do long before your accident happens.

Never Admit Fault

Even if you believe you are at fault, you should not admit to causing the accident.  It can be difficult to ascertain all of the facts in an accident, especially during a potentially traumatic experience. Avoid discussing how the accident happened with other drivers or witnesses. Check and make sure the other drivers and passengers are not injured but avoid apologizing or saying anything that could be construed as an admission of fault.

Call the Police

You should do this just to be safe.  Injuries and/or property damage, more than just a ding, require a call to the authorities. Report the accident immediately.

Exchange Information

This is very important.  Exchange contact and insurance information with all parties involved.  This information is often included in the accident report.  When you are hurt in an accident you often have to deal with the other party’s insurer and not the individual themselves. Collect the contact information of any witnesses as well.

Take Pictures

Safely, take photos of the car accident if you can.  Pay particular attention to any damage done to the vehicles, skid marks on the road and stop signs, signals or other traffic control devices.

Take Notes

While you wait for the police to arrive, record what happened.  Write down what you were doing before the accident, where you were going, the time, and weather conditions. Keep a record of what you saw, heard and felt.  Track your injuries and seek treatment.  Relying on your memories of the event may be difficult.
